Hi all, am new to this forum. I recently purchased a refurbished LG Optimus with 1 gig ram. It is currently operating 4.4.2. There is a system upgrade available, but I'm not sure which system I will get on the upgrade. I've read some horror stories about Lolipop and am thinking if I knew I were going to get that one, I might want to stay with my current system. I'm not thrilled with the white screen, battery problems etc. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

As far as I know the LG Optimus (G or L9) does not have an official update to Lollipop, but it would help if you would mention the exact smartphone model you own. In any case, if it's an older model from 2012 as I assume, then the only way to get Lollipop is to install a custom ROM. Some ROMs are better than others, and at this point in time the device might no longer be supported by 3rd party developers either. So there is indeed a risk of bricking or making your phone worse by installing a custom Lollipop ROM.
However, officially, there is no Lollipop for the older LG Optimus devices (yours could be included), and whatever update notification you have received, it may not be related to a full system update to a different iteration of Android. It could be just a small security update. Either way, the changes or the nature of the update should be mentioned directly on your phone when you check for updates.
Hope this helped

Re: LG OS upgrade
I really have no interest in trying to get Lolipop, with all that I have heard about it, so your info was exactly what I wanted to know, thanks very much. Keith

Re: LG OS upgrade
Glad to hear!
I should stress that the official Android 5 Lollipop OS is actually very good. Many people believe the last version of Lollipop - before Android 6.0 Marshmallow was released - is the greatest Android version to date. However, as mentioned in my original post, official releases and custom ROMs are not the same thing. For older phones, custom ROMs are also rather old or not as well supported by their third party developers, which is why you might hear a lot of bad stories.
But make the mistake: the official Android 5.1.1 Lollipop release (from Google) is great. Unfortunately it's no longer officially supported by older smartphone models.
Good luck!

Re: LG OS upgrade
I was about to hit upgrade when I noticed that the screen indicates it is going to upgrade to Lolipop. My phone is an Optimus D415, I'm not sure which version of Lolipop I will get, but you feel it will be ok to proceed?

Re: LG OS upgrade
Just an FYI, the upgrade seemed to go with no problems, I now have 5.0.2, however, the voicemail icon is now present in the notification panel, even though I have no messages. Can't seem to get rid of it, anyone have any suggestions?
