OK, First post. I am hoping you guys can tell me what I am doing wrong.

I have 100 or so contacts. When I try to Text Message one of then, it bounces back saying please add area code. When I look at the contact record, it has the DAMN area code. No where do these contacts not have an area code.

I have had this problem with all my contacts. Both in network and out of network but all have messaging.

    Any ideas?

    Re: Messaging problem

Does the area code look like this (555) ? If so try removing the parentheses.

A fix for this will be in the Dec 11th update. (it's under "Incorrect Message Delivery" on the 5th page)

So you can either wait for the update or remove the parentheses for your most common texting friends.

Well turns out you solved it now it doesn't work again. I did have parenthesis around the area code. So I took them out, and it worked about 15 or 20 texts to that person. Now I don't have any parenthesis in this contact and again it says use area code.. Perhaps this is all part of the bug to be fixed in December. I am hoping this isn't a foreshadow of the 1st generation Droids.

Is the contact syncing with gmail and overwriting the number? (or putting it in as another number?)

I thought so... but after the first sync I cleaned up all the extra numbers. I fixed the paren issue. I have checked both my Google contact and the contact in the phone, and they are the same (no Paren)

I thought for sure this was a sync issue, but I can't find any evidence of that.

    Re: Messaging problem (Work Around)

Well.... I think they have other bugs in the Google PC world and the sync with the Droid.

If I completely delete the contact and recreated it.... it works...

If I just try to remove the ( ) from the area code it didn't work

If I try to create the contact from the phone, it doesn't work..

Just so you know... I used EXACTLY the same info in all 3 tests.

Messaging problem @ a complete loss

Well my problem is back... So something somewhere is being over written, and I have no earthly idea where it is . I see the number when I bring up a contact to message, and it has the area code WITHOUT the ( )... yet when I send I get an error back saying area code needed!!!! I have uninstalled every market place app thinking maybe one of those was stepping on the Google Messaging app..

So I guess I am faced with waiting till 12/11 and hoping that fixes my issues.. Apparently I am not in the majority of people having this issue. But it is quickly making me doubt my purchase of the phone in its early stages.

    Re: Messaging problem

Sounds like something is being written over with your address book although it also sounds like you've looked into that. If you're using the address book in Gmail, I do notice it has a habit of doing strange things and changing things--especially when you merger contacts together. Can't put my finger on it but I know there's something amiss there. I wonder if this might be part of the problem you're having?

It does seem strange you're having this issue and it doesn't seem like it's a common problem which makes it all the more frustrating because we can't help you.

Thanks GadgetRick. You are right. It seems the general frustration is that I am the minority...

I did do a full phone factory reset. So far the texting is working. But it has always worked for about a day before it quits... So we'll see.

I will post if this fixes the problem.

Hope it fixes your problem. Just sucks when you have a problem nobody else is having. Not that others don't believe you, rather, nobody can help.
