At this point, I think we know as much as you do. I say this because, today, at the Google Press Conference (at CES), Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola, said (and I quote): "he 'thinks' his company will update the Droid to use the Nexus One's build." I am sure it will happen, but exactly when is anyone's guess. Moreover, considering that Nexus One is coming to Verizon in the Spring, I would think (or hope) that the update arrives well before then.

    News about Android 2.1 availability

With the announcement of the Google Nexus One phone comes this bit of news...

From the DroidForums email sent earlier today:

The Droid of course is a great phone and has great hardware and some features that the Nexus One does not... and that's when we were excited to hear from the Google team that Android 2.1 should be "open sourced" and available for use on handsets that support it (this includes the Droid) within the next couple of days. Expect to see all the goodness of 2.1 on your Droid very soon, including Live Wallpapers and the recently announced Google Earth for Android which will be available from the App store very soon.

    And this from PC World:

    • So is my Droid obsolete?

Far from it. The main differences between the Droid and the Nexus One are the speed and the screen. The rest of the stuff is generally tied to the Android 2.1 update, and the Droid will be receiving that update, too.

The Nexus One, of course, has a different look and feel to it -- it's a bit more rounded and iPhone-esque, compared to the Droid's more angled and rugged appearance -- but that all comes down to personal preference.

Ultimately, if you're happy with the speed and the display of your Droid, you're in fine shape. The software changes will make their way to your phone soon, too.

It looks like the 2.1 SDK was released today - that's a good sign
