I can't get my razr to ackknowledge the usb cable

Anyone know as to why this is hapening. It's my personal phone and I plug it in but when I am trying to do this and that it won't ackknowledge it. Can I have a bad cable or maybe the port on my laptop is not working correctly?

Who is your carrier? What model of RAZR?

The phone is a T-Mobile branded Razr. I get my hands on alot of these and usually just sale them the way I get them but I thought it would be fun to unlock them and such. I went to another site that is very popoular and downloaded the software and all that. But when when plugged in and it updates I am told that i need to keep unplugging the usb cable and then plugging it back in until all of the updates take and then i can use the unlock credit and it's done. I keep doing this but still do get any updates that I can add and therfor cannot finish adding the code. I can post the site that I got my stuff from if thats allowed as alot of people seem to use their stuff with no problem?
