Motorola Razr V3m External Glass

This may sound like a really dumb question, but please just keep with me here... lol:

I cracked the external glass on my Razr v3m... the lcd screen itself still works just fine.

What would happen if say the external glass completely came off? Would the screen still work, or should I really worry about protecting this already cracked screen?
