I want to use this phone to dial my isp and surf using my laptop. will I just be charged for airtime minutes or will I incur some data charges. Also should I use the modem on my laptop or use the phone as a modem? I set it up with a usb data cable using the motorola modem, but I want to make sure I wasn't being charged some astronomical data charge. Will this work if I use the modem on my laptop and just use the phone as a dialer, this way it looks like a phone call I guess right. Anybody with expertise please enlighten me. TIA

the phone would have to be used as the modem for you to connect. verizon says that it will only use your minutes but you may want to call customer service to be sure

Verizion doesn't have a "data" connection pretty much just a dial up so it'll just use your min unless you have free nights and weekends, just do it then.

Actually that is not 100% accurate. Verizon has 1xrt data which is equivilant to GPRS on a GSM network. The V710 will allow you to connect to either "dial up" where your phone dials an actual phone number like your home dial up would do. or you can connect to the 1x network. which is much faster than the first.

The 1xrt id a strictly data way of connecting and it is not like your phone is just making a call. I called CS and they told me that either way you are using your minutes. and not getting charged by the KB. I guess when i get the bill i will see which is correct.

Motorola is coming out with an update to the V710 soon. i think its the 835 or something like that. they claim the camera is improved and it will connect to there new broadband data network or EVDO service. they call it broadband access. they claim it will give speeds of 300kb a sec to 500 kb a sec which is about the speed of the slowest DSL connection.
