Cingular SIM in T-Mobile Motorola V300

I am using a Cingular SIM Card in an unlocked Motorola V300. It seems that my connection quality is much less than using the same SIM in my Cingular phone. E.G. I can be standing in the exact same place and have full bars using my Sony Ericson but only one or no bars using the Motorola; both using the same SIM.

Is this normal?
