I was thinking of buying a cell phone this weekend and had some questions about it. Firstly, do i need to be 18 to buy it, my parents will allow me to have one but refuse to sign for it and im only 17. I can get my brother to sign for it but he doesn't have established credit which leads me to my next question. I heard that you need a 400 dollar secruity deposit to buy one without established credit, is this true? I was going to go to radio shack or something in the galleria to look at them and wanted to check this stuff out before i wasted my time. Plz help me out here, would be appreciated.

Just buying a phone? Or do you mean you're trying to get new activation with a service provider?

    Re: Questions on buying

So I'm guessing you're going to try and get a new activation with phone. Ok. It depends upon "approval". I've seen some people get $300 to $500...some other people where talking that they got $700 for security deposit. Sometimes other people get 0 deposit. However, after a period of time (I'm with Cingular so it's a year, not familiar w/ other providers that much) and good standing with the company, they'll refund the deposit back to you. I think your main concern right now is just to contact the service provider and go from there.

First of all, I think this thread is in the wrong forum.

Second, what carrier are you trying to go with? Roughly the deposits look like this:

    Sprint - $0/50/100/150/250
    T-Mobile - $0/250/500
    Cingular - $0/200/400/500/750

Also, you do need to be atleast 18 years old in order to have contract service under your name.

I didn't know which forum to put it under so i used this one, sorry. Im planning on going with cingular and my brother said he would sign for it, hes 19 but doesn't have established credit, hes paying for a car right now, dunno if that means anything but what determins the deposit? I was thinking of getting a motorla razor with a 1 or 2 year plan so the phone is free because i wont have enough for the phone if the deposits 400 or more, i have the 400 now and can have around 5-600 by friday.
