I have a Motorola Razr V3C and I want to use Mobile Phone Tools to put ringtones and stuff on it. I have it installed, but when it tries to detect the phone it can't. When I try to do it manually it picks it up as a modem and I cant access my contacts or anything. What could be wrong?

Also, i have a 29 second Mp3 file i want to use as a ringtone on the phone. Will that work?

First, this question has been beaten to death in this forum.

If you have Verizon, most likely you will not be able to use MPT to put your MP3 files on your phone. Verizon has disabled OBEX, the protocol required to move files onto your phone. If your V3c is running firmware version .03 or .04, you are out of luck. Without a seem edit or complete firmware flash, you will not be able to add your custom ringtones through MPT. However, you can still use pix messaging to send your ringtones to your phone.

As for your :29 MP3, I have a 2:00 MP3 ringtone on my phone. You will only ever hear about :20 of your ringtone before it goes to VM, but it can be as long as you want it. Just bare in mind that your phone only have about 30MB of free space to begin with.

Does your V3c have the Verizon UI installed on it? If not, you should be able to connect using MPt with no problem. the Alltel firmware is not as crippled as the Verizon versions. Follow these steps to try and connect your phone to MPT:

You need to first make sure you are updated as far as you can go (currently 4.21a). Then click on "Menu", go to "General Setup" and click the "Communications" tab. Click "Change Modem" and follow the instructions. When you get to the "detect driver" screen, put a check mark in the box next to "Do not automatically detect driver. Select from list." and click "Next".

Choose "Motorola CDMA" and scroll the list until you see "V3cm". Select this phone and click "Next". Then, simply click "Finish" and it will reload MPT. Your phone will be recognized and you will have access to the "Multimedia Studio" options.

If this does not work, then you may want to uninstall and reinstall the software. Then try the above procedure again.

Getting that message means that your Verizon V3c is running firmare version .03 or .04, which means that without a seem edit or total firmware downgrade, you are out of luck.

If you downgrade your phone to firmware version .02, you will be able to use multimedia with no problem. You can also do a simple seem edit (search the forum for instructions) to enable that potion of the phone original functionality.

Unfortunately, there is no other way around it.

That was why I suggested uninstalling and reinstalling the software. Apparently there is something wrong with your current installation. When you are ready to reinstall, use the link I included in my previous post. That is how I did it and liveupdate worked just fine for me.
