Will an unlocked phone work with any provider? I contacted Motorola and was told that even though a phone was sold as "unlocked" the software within the phone was geared toward the original provider (whomever) and probably wouldn't work well with my provider (Cellular One) if it wasn't originally made to be a Cellular One phone. I planned to buy several unlocked, GSM phones and insert my Cellular One Sim cards. Is Motorola right or will any GSM unlocked phone work just as well whether it was Cellular One originally or not? Motorola went on to say that the only unlocked phones that would work well were the unlocked razors that they sold and that they had never sold unlocked phones in the past. Are they trying to scare me off? Thanks

It looks as though that's the case, though the software on the hpone is geared to ... say t-mobile even though I put my cingular sim card in there it will still work, only all the front screen animations, ringtones wap settings etc., will stay the same for t-mobile. Unless you flash/flex your unlocked phone with your provider software it will continue to read t-mo or whatever. As for the v3 being the only one you can do this with I have a V3 as well as a V330 and a V600, all unlocked that all work, so you can tell them to stick it.

    Re: Unlocked phone

I use Cellular One, and I have come across more than a few unlocked phones that weren't from Cell One that worked just fine when I put my SIM card in them. Cell One CSR's aren't the smartest people on the planet, and they basically told me the same thing when I inquired about this same issue a long time ago. Next time they try to feed you a line of crap, just say that if you wanted smoke blown up your a$$, you'd be at home with a pack of cigarettes and a short length of hose...

It is true, however, that you will not be able to use the enhanced network features like mobile internet or your service providers proprietary download site (for games, ringtones, etc.). The software in your (example) T-Mobile phone will not work with (example) Cingular's enhanced network. But, you will be able to use the phone and address book features with no problems!
