trying to get a razor phone w/old at&t plan

Hi,
I have an older AT&T plan (800 minutes for $49.99) which is now operated by Cingular Wireless. I have an old Nokia phone and want to buy a Motorola Razor phone; however, Cingular says I cannot get a new phone (even if I bought it myself) without signing up for a new Cingular plan which are all inferior plans. Is this true? Someone at Cingular (via telephone not the store) said I could buy a new phone (from someone other than Cingular) and just replace the chip in the new phone with the one from my Nokia phone.
To make matters worse, Cingular is now charging me an extra $5/month because I have the old technology - (not GMS?)
Can someone please help me?! I would greatly appreciate knowing what my options are. Thank you!!!

you can definitly get a razr, jus buy a cingular locked or unlocked one

they are quite cheap these days

just replace your sim card and you're good to go

But he/she has a TDMA SIM! Won't the RAZR only work on the GSM network?

Does anyone know if the RAZR will work on the old tdma technology?

I don't think it will, but perhaps Korean_Boi thinks so. I just don't because of the technologies. Sorry!

Why would you want to continue paying the extra money every month to remain on Cingular's antiquated TDMA system? It's time to upgrade to a GSM phone, especially since Cingular will be completely turning off their TDMA service in a year or so.
