Problem: Missed Calls On L6 Only Result in Cryptic Text Message

Hello, I bought an unlocked British L6 on eBay. I use Cingular in the US. Here is my problem: instead of getting missed call notifications (i.e. when I am making a call or the phone is off), I only get a text message with no sender that reads only "?@" (The question mark should be a delta sign there)
This is quite frustrating as I never know what call I have missed!
If anyone can help me, I would be grateful. Thank you!
