    Re: MOTOROLA W510 ringtones

I am not familiar with the W510, but most moto phones require ring tones to be no more than a certain length, or file size. Usually no more than 500 to 600kb.

They also demand that the song quality be no higher than a certain bit rate, usually 192 or 256 bit.

If you downloaded the ring tone from a web site, they are usually cropped to fit in both catagories. If you converted it yourself from a CD, you'll need to redo it to reduce the bit rate, and crop it to shorter lenght.

    Re: MOTOROLA W510 ringtones

I don't think it's a size or bitrate limitation, the W510 with the Fido software simply won't allow any sound other than those provided with the phone to be set as a ringtone. With this particular model this is particularly frustrating because of the small number and dubious quality of default ringtones provided with it. In my case I simply wanted to transfer a few ringtones from my old Fido phones which are both Motorola models (V190 and RZR V3) but this proved impossible. Copying the ringtones from the old phones to the computer and then on to the new W510 was a breeze but setting them as ringtones is just not possible, the function appears to be disabled in the software.

With the current software, I don't think this issue can be fixed. So far the only way I have found to install a new ringtone on the W510 is to download the sound through WAP but even that only works 1 time out of 3 it seems. Unfortunately Fido will charge you for the download whether it works or not. The W510 is not a cheap phone, Fido should at least warn potential customers that they won't be able to benefit from all the functions advertised by Motorola if they choose this phone. I suspect the more expensive model the W510 is derived from also has similar limitations as it uses the same software.

It is indeed unfortunate that some carriers disable functions that the phone manufacturers build in. Verizon is famous for this also. And learning this information up front, *before* you sign a contract, is not always easy. Even if you know what to ask, salesmen can lie and deceive, and after you sign can just say, "no, I never said that." That's why forums like this one where you can learn from other peoples experiences are so valuable.

Perhaps the day is not too far off, when we will have an open market in the wireless world, where carriers will compete on service and price only, leaving the phone makers to compete on featurers and performance. The current system stifles innovation and is extremely frustrating for consumers and manufactureres alike..

Apparently this is done by carriers due to copyright issues pertaining to the use of commercial MP3's as ringtones. While I understand the idea behind these concerns I don't see how it's any carrier's business if individuals choose to break copyright laws, this is the individual's responsibility. Since when does Sony/Yamaha/Harman-Kardon/NAD and the like block functions on their audio devices because a customer *may* play a pirated CD on their equipment? They don't, that would be ridiculous.

Manufacturers and software OS publishers for cell phones can't be held accountable for what their customers do with their phones so IMHO Fido shouldn't cripple the software. All this accomplishes is to entice customers who wouldn't otherwise "misbehave" to use hacked software to restore functions they have opted to pay for when they chose a particular phone model based on features advertised by the manufacturer.

    Re: MOTOROLA W510 ringtones

    Hot damn I got it

I found a way to install all the ringtones I want on my W510 despite the carrier's crippled software. This is how it's done:

Note: in order to be able to use this method one has to have two Motorola phones: the W510 and an older one that isn't ringtone-locked (I tried a V190 and and RAZR V3 and both worked).

First create a backup directory on your drive and call it something like "Original Motorola W510 audio directory". The name doesn't really matter as long as you can find it later if you ever need those files again. Next install the ringtones you want to have on your W510 to the old uncrippled phone.

    Then follow these steps:

Step 1 - Connect the W510 to your computer via USB or Bluetooth

Step 2 - Fire up P2K (latest version)

Step 3 - In the right pane navigate to P2k:/c/mobile/audio/ on the W510; in the left pane navigate to the backup directory you just created on your hard drive. It will be empty.

Step 4 - Select all the files in P2k:/c/mobile/audio/, right-click and select "copy", the files will be automatically pasted in your backup directory.

Step 5 - Delete all the files in P2k:/c/mobile/audio/. Once this is done the "audio" directory will have vanished so it's possible that P2K will crash, this is not a problem.

Step 6 - Create a new directory on your disk, name doesn't matter. Unplug the W510 from the computer and reboot it (the phone), then close P2K (if it hasn't crashed already) and plug the older Motorola phone into the computer, wait for the computer to recognize the new phone, then restart P2K. On the right pane navigate to the old phone's audio directory (same location as on the W510), on the left go to the new directory you have just created.

Step 7 - use the method described in Step 4 to copy all the files in the audio directory to your hard disk. *Do not erase any files in the old phone's audio directory*
Shut P2K down and unplug the old phone from the computer. Plug in the W510 and wait for the computer to recognize it. Once this is done fire up P2K once more.

Step 8 - Remember that the audio directory on the W510 is gone, so you can't navigate directly to it, you need to create it first. In the right pane go to /c/mobile/ and select "New Folder" from the menu at the bottom of the pane. Name the new folder "audio" and navigate to it.

Step 8 - In the left pane navigate to the new directory on your hard drive that contains the audio files from the old phone.

Step 9 - Copy all those audio files to the new audio folder you just created on the W510.

Step 10 - That's it, your W510 now contains every single ringtone that was on your old phone and all of them now have the "apply" option enabled so the W510 will now accept any of those sounds as a ringtone.

Unfortunately the W510 still won't accept sounds from any other source than the old phone but as long as you're able to get those those sounds (inclding custom sounds) to register as ringtones on the old phone you'll be able to transfer them to the W510 using the method described above. It's a little tedious but there ain't no such thing as a free lunch is there.

I don't know if it would work if a non-Motorola phone is used as the source, but I doubt it because one has to use P2K to transfer the files and as far as I know P2K is designed to handle Motorola software.

You could however see if you know someone who has an old Motorola phone lying around. Using your SIM in it you could install the ringtones you want then transfer them to the W510.

Check the connection settings on your phone to see if USB is set to data. I'm not 100% sure but I think P2K doesn't recognize the phone if USB is set to memory card.
