If I wanted to switch from my Motorola L6 cell phone to a cell phone that Verizon provides how would I do this???

I know I have to buy the phone seperatly and go through a process called unlocking... but is this correct and is it hard to do?

If I need to provide the model of phone I am looking into getting I can do that as well...
