Alright...
I see that someone asked this question before, but the answer was not really clear.
I have a brand new Motorola W385 and a new USB cable from a friends Razr, which I've read up on...
Compatability: V3 V3c V3i V3m V3t V3e V3r V3x V3xx Razr / Z6m / Z6tv / W315 / W385 / KRZR K1 / K1m / RIZR Z3 / SLVR L7 / L6 / L2 / Q PDA / PEBL U6 / V190 - V235 / C290 / V323 / V325 / V360 / V361 / A668 / A780 / E1070 and Motorola Nextel Sprint ic402 / ic502 - Also works for certain BlackBerry Phones, Handheld
So it should work, as far as I can tell.
My USB ports work.
I have Mobile Phone Tools 3.28.
If I were to use P2k commander, how would that work? I opened it and it looked confusing.
I've installed drivers found online (possibly I need different ones, if anyone can help me with that?).
Now the problem I'm having is that I can't get MPT to recognize my phone and I can't find it in the list to manually do it.
Can someone please give me, or direct me to, a detailed step by step? I have no problem making the .mp3 files fit for ringtones and I know my W385 is .mp3 ready since a friend has sucessfully sent me .mp3's in bluetooth... that part I don't need help on...
Getting this phone connected via the USB cable is all that I really need some direction with.
If anyone could help at all, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you!

Re: Using the USB data cable and Motorola Mobile Phone tools with a W385?
Once you have p2kcommander connected - you can drop your ringtones (mp3 files) in the following folder:
a/brew/mod/my_ringers/
Then brows to a/ and delete MyToneDB.db and TmpTneDB.db
Restart the phone and you should be able to use the new mp3 files as ringtones.

Re: Using the USB data cable and Motorola Mobile Phone tools with a W385?
To get p2kcommander to detect the phone i went to options -
Check use this com port - and set the box to comX - where X is the com port number of the motorola usb modem
I also used new(fast) 3G-P2K commands.
- you are looking for the usb p2k device found or P2K Tci IF up messages; Volume name fail! & GENERIC FAILURE. are normal-

If you are going to mess with your phone, you should know a little something about computers. If you don't, you are going to really screw up your phone.
Com port is found after connecting you phone in the device manager. Go to "control panel", "system", "hardware" tab, "device manager", expand "Ports" (COM & LPT). I will show under "Motorola Usb Diag com Port (COMx). That what you put in p2kcommander in use this COM port.

Re: Using the USB data cable and Motorola Mobile Phone tools with a W385?
I do know things here and there about computers but I'm convinced there is something I'm missing because I can usually get these things to work without this much trouble. I'm starting to wonder why my phone came with this USB cable anyhow if it's so difficult to do anything with.
However, I can't seem to get it to work from your instructions.
In my device manager:
motorola usb diagnostic port (COM6)
And when I click it's properties:
Device Type: Ports (COM & LPT)
Manufacturer: Motorola
Location: Motorola W385
So as far as I can tell it does know my phone is plugged in.
When I enter 6 under "Use this com port:" in P2K... it just searches for it and says "alt+mode=8-->6" again and again in the log.
I followed your same step by step instructions on another forum and downloaded the HandsetUSBDriver and installed that. Still no luck... I have AIM if you do and wouldn't mind a little help if you find the time. desrouvierLast edited by kamino; 03-11-2008 at 02:59 PM.

You must enter COM6 without a space. MUST include COM.

Re: Using the USB data cable and Motorola Mobile Phone tools with a W385?
After struggling with the motorola phone tools and my new Motorola W385, I was eventually informed I should have Version 4.5.1c of the motorola phone tools in order for it to work. Is this correct, that only that version will work with this phone? Old Geezer
