    Hi,
I looked for any answers that might be here already but didn't see any so here's my question:

I just got a new MOTOROLA Z6M_R (Alltel) after being VERY happy with my Razrv3 for a couple of years and can't seem to apply songs (mp3) that I have put into my song list as ring tones...I have always done this with my RAZR very easily...any ideas?

I'm a little upset that the image they show on their web site is not at all what my phone is...the web site made it look like it was the same metal body with a not-smooth face, like my RAZR, but in reality it is plastic and shiny which is gonna look like hell after a short ammt of time.

So...my second question is, how about some sort of case or protective item to keep it from getting too scratched?

Thanks a million! I'm reading through other posts to see if someone may have mentioned this as well.

Much Mahalo to you and yours,
    Scott

    Re: Z6M_R MP3 Ring tone question +

The Z6M does allow custom ring tones. And since it's music player supports AAC, MP3, AAC+, and WMA formats, those can all probably be used for ring tones.

That doesn't mean that Alltel may not have resticted some of those features in their version of the phone.

First thing I would try is to shorten one of the songs down to ring tone length. If its the beginning of the song that you want to use, its pretty easy. Just take the first 20 to 30 seconds and chop it out. You can do it with a free program called Audacity. There is a link to download Audacity, and instructions on how to use it at the site linked in my signature.

    Re: Z6M_R MP3 Ring tone question +

I've got the same problem. I've been using mp3 ringtones on my Razr V3m with no problems (Alltel). Recently purchaced the Rokr Z6m and moved my sd card to this phone with all my mp3s. Not able to apply any of them as ringtones as I could with V3m. Another forum said to just move the files to the phone memory and this will solve it. Did that but still can't use them. The length of the song isn't the issue because some of my ringtones are 7 to 17 secs long. Alltel rep didnt know why they won't work and advised me to call Moto support, which I haven't tried as of yet. Has anyone found the answer to this problem?

As far as protecting the phone from scratches, etc....I work in a steel mill and so I wanted something to protect the phone. Purchased the ProTech invisible shield on ebay and applied it 3 days ago and I'm pretty happy with the result. It's not cheap at $22 with shipping but for my situation it's worth it. There's a cheaper version that only covers the screen for about half that price and they will replace if it ever peels off, etc. Also bought a leather case made for the Z6m on amazon made by Luxmo for $14.95 and I love it. Very sturdy, well made case for this phone.

Let me know if anyone's figured out the ringtone issue....Jeff

According to Phone Scoop, the Z6M does not support real music ring tones. Although that seems like an odd feature to leave out, considering it has a music player and supports MP3s for that.

Be interested to hear what Motorola has to say.

    Re: Z6M_R MP3 Ring tone question +

    OK, here's the dig...

Moto said there must be something wrong with my phone so I told Alltel that. Alltel sent me another and I had the same problem so I sent it back and ordered another RAZR V3 like my last phone.

Now, using the same computer and same software I can't put the mp3 songs as ringers either. Even ones that I created in my own studio with my own music...I know I didn't 'protect' my sorry assed music so I know it isn't a copyright infringement issue. For the Z6M to not allow custom ringtones to use mp3s is absurd. What is more, for Moto to change the feature I liked best in their v3's and still call it by the same name is ludicrous.

I haven't searched any further for this issue yet, but if I can't fix it I'm going to stick with my older razrv3 with a broken outer cover so I can have my ring tones and save the new one for emergencies. Then I'll start shopping other phones.

Thanks for the input, I'll update as anything changes.

    MAhalo!

Strange. The only other restriction on rings tones, or music in general on cells phones, is the bit rate. See if your ring tones are less than 192 bit.
