question about unlocked phones...

hi...

this is Lee, and i'm a firefighter in kentucky...i'm in need of a durable phone for use at work...i've had nextel, and just couldn't deal with them any longer...but i love the handset...

i'm interested in using an unlocked motorola i580 (nextel) on the at&t network...i know they are different networks, and i haven't unlocked the phone yet, but i wonder if anyone knows if it's possible?

From what I gather, the Nextel is a TDMA phone and ATT is a GSM - so it appears they are incompatible - however, GSM uses a form of TDMA but in the 900mhz range, and the Nextel appears to be an 800mhz phone.
