SLVR L7, how to format MicroSD 2Gb card?

My girlfriend and I just bought a pair of used L7's from Ebay and both came with the factory 512Mb cards but no instructions or user manuals. We can use those cards perfectly fine with music and whatever. She wanted more storage room so I picked up a couple of SanDisk MicroSD 2Gb cards. We need to know how to format these things so that we can store music on them. If I just put the card into one of our phones, nothing happens. Putting it into the computer with the appropriate adapter, the computer doesn't even recognize that the card has been inserted. When I bought the pair of cards, I went through two separate vendors just in case one of the cards didn't work------hopefully they weren't the same vendor with two different selling names. Both of my 2Gb cards do this though. If there is something like a driver or whatever thats needed, please send me a link or show me where I can get it. Basically I know nothing about how to get these cards to work so that I can put music them. One last thing, the 512 cards say "TransFlash" on them; was I supposed to get a 2Gb card that says TransFlash also??
