problem with LC502

this is my husband's work phone, Motorola ic502.
yesterday, (Monday, not using it all weekend), he noticed the speaker phone will work on the phone to talk to people but once you turn off the speakerphone, you cannot hear the other person anymore. Whats going on with this phone? did he push something?
