adding apps

hello everybody,
I have a verizon motorola rival and I've been trying to get games on it. Unfortunately my plan doesn't have data but I heard that there is some way to load an app from an external memory card. Is this possible? I've tried emailing an app to my phone, just copying it to my phone and sending it via bluetooth, none have worked. (oh, I found free apps from mobile9.com)
