Need help with DIY Droid X solar charger.-2014-02-27_17-22-18_896_zpswkwve4ir.jpg

I built a USB solar charger using 4 5V panels, 8 1.2V AA batteries, and a circuit board from a USB car charger. It charges my MP3 player, but doesn't charge my Droid X. I am using a Motorola cord that works fine with the Motorola wall wort.

Does the USB port/circuit board need one of the data lines tied to the -12 line? Possibly with a resistor?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Using an ohmmeter and an old webcam cable, I determined that the stock wall wort had a dead short between the two data lines, so I soldered in a jumper between the data lines on my USB header and it now works. 5.05V @.85A without the sun charging. In the process of mounting everything to a case, I will measure the solar cell output and post that as well.

Neat! Yeah, I've read that if there is no data then the lines need to be shorted.

The solar panels and batteries all came from dead (water/corrosion) ornamental yard lights. The battery holder was repurposed from a dead littermaid automatic litter box. The cells are wired in series, as are the batteries for a system voltage of 9.6v. I used a salvage schotky (sp) diode with .55 forward voltage to keep the voltage in the batteries and out pf the cells in the dark.
As of yet, I have not spent a penny on this project. I need to get two good batteries as two show -1v, and an enclosure.

I picked up a sandwich container at the dollar tree today, and using some styrofoam, foam-core, and weatherstripping foam, I started to assembly my charger.

    As of this time.

Cool stuff man! Love this kind of things, but I'm always dead scared of messing up with things and damaging my phone/iPod
