WARNING! When you factory reset your phone, all the personal data located on the device’s internal memory will be deleted, including apps, contacts, media files and ringtones, downloaded content etc. Furthermore, all settings will be restored to factory values. However, data stored on the SIM and SD cards will not be affected.

NOTE: Before you factory reset the device, you can visit this thread for instructions on how to back up your data.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Open the apps drawer
  2. Go to “Settings
  3. Scroll to “Personal” and tap “Backup & reset
  4. Tap “Factory data reset
  5. In case your phone is lock screen-protected, enter your PIN / password to proceed
  6. Tap “Reset phone” to confirm

Factory Data Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: In case you are unable to reset the phone via Settings, alternatively you can try resetting the device from Android System Recovery. This hidden menu can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses:

  1. First, make sure the Moto G4 is turned off
  2. Next, press and hold “Volume down”, then “Power
  3. When the first menu appears, release all buttons
  4. Navigate the menu by pressing “Volume down” and highlight “Recovery mode
  5. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  6. At the “No command” screen, press and hold “Power”, and then press “Volume Up
  7. Once in the Recovery menu, release all keys
  8. Press “Volume down” repeatedly to highlight “Wipe data / factory reset
  9. Press “Power” to confirm
  10. Press “Volume down” and highlight “Userdata only” or “Userdata + personalized content
  11. Press “Power” to select the option and reset the phone
  12. After the factory reset is done, “Reboot system now” should be highlighted
  13. Press “Power” to confirm and reboot your phone

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: After you factory reset your phone, it’s recommended to check if new software updates are available for download. To do this:

  1. Go to “Settings
  2. Under “System”, tap “About phone
  3. Tap “System updates” and, if necessary, follow the on-screen prompts to download and apply any available updates (NOTE: This process may require a reboot)
