Thank you, roberts1953. Page plus seems to be exactly what I need.

Try Pag Plus prepaid. They operate on Verizons network, which provides some of the best coverage across the country. They will activate any verizon phone. You can pick one up on ebay for cheap. Then buy a page plus activation kit on ebay for less then $10. They have a 50 cent per month fee, and rates are 10-15 cents a minute. Roaming out of Verizon's home areas is $.99 per minute. Their smallest card is $10 and expires after 120 days. Minimum cost is $2.50 per month. This will cost you $30 per year for an emergency and casual use phone with great coverage.

you can get prepaid for alot less then $30 a month look at tmobile, boost mobile,cinglar,net10,virgin mobile they are all around $20 every 3 months ( you need to add that amt. every 90 days or so depending on the carrier to keep active ) use the search around the forum for different carriers they are all listed here with there pricing and websites $30 a month would be for a contracted account which it sounds like you don't need

Hi, I'm a 110% newbee to cell phones. I don't have one, I don't really need one. But: I ride my motorcycle cross-country long distance. It would be a good feeling to have a cell phone with me, just in case. What is the best way to have a phone that I hopefully will not use. I already looked at pay-as-you-go plans. They are about about $30 a month, 360 a year. A bit expensive if I need it only as a kind of insurance. Is there anything better out there? Advanced thanks for any help.
