Directory assistance generally cost more than a buck.
Heres a tip...save the 411 METRO to your phone book.
I never use DA, but I found that number a few months back and gave it to my son (who is on my cell account).

Thanks for weeding out the best and sharing.

    Hi, All

I recently learned that you can get *free* directory assistance from your mobile or landline. There are a few different services out there and I've been testing them for quality. Most use a really antiquated form of voice recognition that doesn't work very well, esp. from a cell connection.

The best one I've found so far is 1-800-411-METRO. It begins with a recorded voice asking your listing just like the phone company version, then goes to a live English-speaking operator who connects the call at no additional charge. You just need to listen to a really quick ad (which is better than spending a buck).

Anyway, thought I'd share what I've learned. I'm the ultimate cheapskate and I think the 411-METRO thing is the very quality of the freebies.
