I know this post is old, but I have a answer for anyone else with the same problem. Download a driver for the VX5500 from the LG site. Install that, then try using Bitpim.
I had the same problem - my wife has a VX5500, I have a VX-8300, and I found the same driver worked for the two.

did you ever get the phone connected?

My computer recognizes the phone through the USB as a modem, but bitpim doesn't pick up anything. Any suggestions?

If you are using a USB port in the front of your computer try pluggin it into a USB port in the back of your computer. When plugged into one of the USB ports on the front of my comuter, the software wouldn't recognize my phone. Also, if you installed the Bitpim software before you installed the USB software it won't recognize it either. Try uninstalling the USB sofware and the Bitpim software and reinstalling them (USB software first, then Bitpim software).

I hope this helps, I am not much of an expert but this is what worked for me.

I'm getting my data cable and driver CD in the mail shortly for my 8300. If you want, I could send you the drivers when I get it.

You need to install cable drivers for the USB cable to work. Cable should have come with software. Do a Google search and see if you can find usb cellphone cable drivers.
On my phone, to change to usb, it is under "tools" - "pc Connection"

The USB cable didn't come with drivers and I don't know how to change my phone settings to USB connection.
