The basic jist of it is, sign up for a contract length with a carrier, and they will give you a cheaper (subsidized they call it) phone.

Example, sign on with T-Mobile for 2 years, get a $0 phone. That kind of thing.

And Jeanie is right. Check with other people in your area to see who has the best overall coverage. Even if Cingular costs more, it might be worth it depending on how much you need cellular communication (if you use it mainly for personal or for business).

hmm... so WHAT your saying is, i should get a phone and a service through t-mobile and get the sim card. Where i live, its confusing, pretty much every service sucks except Cingular, but cingular is way to expensive for me so i'd rather stick with T-Mobile.

I would say go for a service and get aphone through them... you can even get a base model with plans to get something schnazzy once you are established...

You need to stick with T-mobile/Cingular (of the big boys) for a phone with a SIM card to work... but you are far better off checking with people who have good service in your area to see what they use... a fancy ohone with a SIM card sucks if the guy in the seat next to you has full signal on Verizon and you have no bars!

I'm trying to get a phone on ebay, but before i buy the phone, i want to take some precautions before i buy something big. I understand that unlocked means i can just put in a sim card. But currently i have no sim card, no phone, no service. So should i just get a service and get a free phone with it, just take out the sim card and put the sim card to the unlocked phone i bought on ebay?\

    Thanks Advice is appreciated.

also what is quadband and all thoes other band thingies i keep hearing.
