When Nokia takes over the world in a few years, 3G wil be the de-facto standard.

I had 3G with my lg phone and it was great. I could download full length songs and movies within seconds. I would recommend getting a 3G compatible phone.

3G is technically different from GSM. 3G uses (say for Europe) WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) and is supposed to be less susceptible to interference, as oppsed to GSM which uses TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access). However, cell sizes tend to be smaller than 900MHz and provide an approximate rf footprint nearly equal to 1800MHz. Unlike GSM, with 3G you can send and receive video (however, some networks do use enhanced GPRS for video streaming). 3G also allows access to TV and other multi-rich freatures. However, pound for pound, dollar for dollar or rupee for rupee an enhanced GSM 2+ (GPRS) handset can provide almost the same as 3G. It really is a matter of choice.
