How about giving scanR a try?

Scan, copy and fax with your camera phone or digital camera

The service essentially allows you to scan, copy, and fax with your camera or camera phone. The idea is that you take a picture of a document, whiteboard, or business card (currently in beta), e-mail the picture to them, and then scanR does OCR on the file and sends you a PDF version of the document. The whole process only takes about a minute or two, and the content of the PDF file that is delivered to you is tagged and easily searchable. This provides a great way to keep digital copies of important documents, and it's truly like having a FedEx Kinko's with you all of the time.

All I can tell you is that it's a discontinued product, made in 1999 and intended for PalmPilots. According to a review I found HERE, "There are two ways to transmit a fax: from your Palm (if you have a modem for it) or via your desktop PC. In the latter scenario, outgoing faxes are transferred to your PC via the PDA's HotSync function, then sent using your desktop modem. Similarly, you can receive faxes on your Palm or your PC, and then transfer them." So, I can't say for sure it would work with a PDA-phone based on the fact every reference to this software I can find with google is talking about a regular palm. Sorry, might want to keep looking.

edit: callwave.com offers a service for incoming fax-to-email which could be used to receive a fax on your phone/pda, but you wouldnt be able to send them back out. I'll keep looking as well, you've piqued my interest.

Ok, I found softward program by Symantec called Mobile Winfax. Is anyone familiar with it? It seems cloe to what I want but I cannot determine if I can send and receive faxes without being connected to a PC or laptop. Can anyone elaborate?

Thank you for the prompt response and redirecting the thread. I am interested in a cellphone with fax capabilities as I recently came into a job that will regularly require me to send and receive faxes at a moment's notice. Rather than be "tethered" to one location in order to do my faxing, I wanted to see what was available. Thank you again, I'll be checking out those links.

Hi Maggie, I changed your thread's title and moved it to a different forum where it would get noticed by more people. I was a little confused at first and thought you wanted to buy a Treo 650 too, if by chance that is what you meant, I can undelete my response to that effect.

I've never had a reason to send a fax from my phone, but I know it's possible with many phones these days; it doesn't necessarily have to be a PDA or smartphone either. I did google fax cell phone and saw right away there are several companies offering mobile fax solutions but I don't have experience with any of them, so all I can do is give you the google link.

Hope this helps... and welcome to the forums!

Turns out Cingular did offer it at one time but not for new subscribers.

Can anyone provide an update as to whether there are any cell phones and service providers who have it available? Thanks so much for any info.
