It looks like I have my answer. The off brand card may be too thin and is not making proper contact inside the phone. Thanks for the referral to the Cingular forum.

I have a LG CU500 and the card I purchased off Ebay was this a TOPRAM 1GB micro SD card.

How do I format the card in the phone? (Sorry, I'm a novice at this).

The card is empty, a check it on my PC.

It looks like the only controls on the side of the phone are ring and speaker controls.

what kind of card, and what kind of phone exactly.
also, did you try to format the card while in the phone.
    delete everything off the card...
One more thing, there might be a little lock tab on the side of the phone, switch it.
    If all else fails...

Still no luck. I shut the phone down, removed the battery, inserted the card, replaced the battery, and turned the phone back on, but it still says "card not ready".

Turn the phone off, put the card in and turn phone on.
    This should format the card.

I purchased this memory card on Ebay...item #320040205082 (sorry, the forum wouldn't let me post a link)
I tried using it in my LG CU500, but after inserting it I checked my memory and it said it "wasn't ready". I took the phone and card to my local Cingular dealer. He had the same result I had and told me the card was bad. Before emailing the seller, I inserted the card in my jump drive and I was able upload and download images to the card from my PC. So now I'm really confused. Is the card just incompatible with my phone? Is it possible that the card is defective for cell phone use, but not as a memory card? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks , John
