    Okay, here is what you have to do to find out for sure if it's happening to you or not. On your bill, all of your roaming calls are listed separately from your in-network calls, even though they're included in the plan. On the summary page, it gives you a total for Roaming Daytime, and Roaming N/W. So, you know how many N/W minutes they say you've used while roaming. Now, you have to get a highlighter and black ink pen (print the bill if you havent already).

    You are going to go down the roaming section of the bill, highlighting every single call that begins after 6:01pm and before 7am (mon-fri) and then from 6:01pm fri til 7am mon (all weekend). After you've highlighted all the roaming N/W calls, you have to add them all together manually. The way I did it was by "clusters", each night would have a total written by it so I didnt get lost addking a hundred numbers together. After you add these numbers together and double check your math, compare it to the amount of Roaming N/W minutes listed on your bill. If the number you get is more than the number on the bill, subtract and the remainder is equal to how many daytime minutes they took from you while you were roaming.

    The last bill I had like this before I made my dad give me back his phone, the difference was 254 minutes. My total daytime minutes used on that bill, incidentally, was 1752, and I pay for 1500 in my plan. Another quick subtraction shows that I should have been 2 minutes shy of going over (cutting it close!) but since all those roaming minutes were mis-billed, I had an extra $25 charge on my bill.

    Say for example, your nights & weekends are supposed to start at 6pm or 7pm, but you're roaming on a network whose N&W don't start until 9pm. Sprint is going to deduct from your daytime minutes until the roaming networks' N&W starts, potentially cheating you out of 2-3 hours of talk time per night if you're not careful. I didn't figure this out until I started manually adding all roaming minutes from 6:01pm-7am and finding discrepancies in how many they say I used. I fought and fought with Sprint over this issue, and they finally told me that YES this is what they're doing and that's just how it's going to be from now on.

    It has come to my attention that Sprint has been lying to us all about the "free roaming" by taking some of our nights & weekends roaming time out of the daytime minutes. I'm sorry if any of you were misinformed by my previous posts in this thread, but Sprint has been deceiving us all.

    If you're on a Free&Clear plan, with the $5 added roaming option, and;
    If you use more than 50% of your total used minutes (not total minutes in plan) roaming, then you will be charged roaming.

    If you're on a Fair&Flexible plan, you will not be charged roaming. It's in the fine print. If you explain to the rep that the service requires you to be roaming, while in your home area (zip code), there should be no problem.

    eg. Sprint has no coverage in most parts of Alaska. Sprint service is covered by affiliates in most areas, which means you are roaming. You will not be charged, because Sprint knows the service requires roaming.

    Good luck. Sprint said they DO have service in my zipcode and I ended up with a $335 roaming bill.

    "With unlimited roaming plans, Sprint may terminate service if a majority of minutes in a given month are used while roaming off of the Sprint PCS Network"

    It may take some time, but if your dad is consistently using excessive minutes out of network, you will get an unpleasant letter or undecipherable bill, at which point your anger management skills will be tested.

    Go ahead and get a Sprint phone. Explain that you don't have local coverage, but you do get roaming, and need the Fair & Flexible plan (unlimited roaming, no extra charge).
    They will be glad to help you out with an area code of your choosing.

    OK I live in a small town. when i type in my area code on the website it says they do not currently offer services in the area" but from what i understand sprint with nextel has no roaming charges so i assume that they are nationwide. Now Verizon is also nationwide and has no roaming charges and my friend who also lives in this small town without any coverage, but she got a phone through them by simply using a zip code from a town that did have coverage. Now is the same possible for Sprint? Could I get a phone and have a long distance number but only pay the $xx.xx charge for the plan I choose? I know the number would be long distance but i really need a cell phone and the local carriers don't have deals like Sprint does. Sorry if I'm not clear. Ask questions and i will try to clarify better.
