I've been using my phone with EVDO turned off now for a couple of months, and still have about 3-4 times the battery life on my phone, charging it every few days instead of every day. I guess the benefit for each person would vary based on how much they use their phone as well. Those using their phone more frequently would probably see less benefit (since more voice time will drain the battery a great deal too).

I use my phone for text messaging and phone calls, without EVDO turned on and have no problems. I think I sent a picture message with EVDO off once as well, without difficulty.

I've had no problems with calls whatsoever, and if I ever encouter them, the mode can easily be turned back on. Since old phones don't have EVDO to begin with, however, I don't expect to run into any problems as long as I'm not using VCAST features.

I changed mine the other day and haven't noticed any difference in my calls. The only other thing that I can think of that it would be used for (as it would be data transmission), are picture messages. I think it may take longer without EVDO on, but I haven't tested this out.

Also, my battery hasn't really seemed to last any longer with EVDO turned off....but it hasn't run out yet, so I'm not entirely sure of that yet either.

how sure are we that the evdo thing is only used for vcast? is it used for anything else? does it help keeping a call connected if 1x isnt doing too well? cause if evdo is for vcast and vcast only, i will gladly disable the feature

could I then do the same thing to turn it back on if I wanted to, later on down the road?

Yeh, I did this on my 8100. There's no sense in the phone constantly scanning for EV-Do if you don't even use it. That's what uses up the battery, the scanning for the signal.

can anyone confirm this? I'm not going to be messing with my phone settings unless I hear some sort of confirmation that this is legit. I wouldn't mind longer battery life, and I never use any of verizon's online offerings.

Posted this in the Verizon forum, but thought it should go here too...

I take a lot of trips to NH from NY, and I noticed that while I was there, my battery would last 4-5 days as opposed to 1-2 days that it normally did. I thought this was strange since I was on Verizon's Extended Network, which normally means the phone is looking for Verizon-owned towers, and will drain the battery faster.

What I found out was that Verizon's new VCAST features use their "EVDO network". Now I don't know all the details about the network (usually indicated by an "EV" icon on the phone in addition to the typical "1X" icon), but what I do know is that when I disable the EVDO network, I get triple+ my battery life on the phone. The feature is only used for VCAST as far as I can tell, so if you don't use VCAST, just disable the feature.

On newer phones, the "EV" signal is even separate from the "1X" signal, so this seems to confirm that there must be additional overhead to maintain a connection to the "EV" network, even if you don't use it.

If you don't use VCAST and you want to extend your power, here's how to disable the "EV" network on VX8100 and VX8300 phones (possibly others as well, I think most LG's may use the same firmware):

    1) Press the Menu button
    2) Press the number "0" seven times. This will get you into the phone's advanced/technician settings menu.
    3) Select the "Network select" option from the next menu
    4) Select "Mode Preference"
    5) Change the mode to "1X Only" I've found that the mode is typically set to "Digital only hybrid" but that may not always be the case.

Press clear until you exit out of the menu screens. You'll now see that the "EV" icon is no longer displayed, and your phone battery should last considerably longer. If you want to ever decide to use VCAST, simply go back into the menus and change the setting back to what it was.

I'm pretty sure this will work on any model phone that uses the EVDO network (LG or otherwise) but other people will have to provide posts for how to access the proper menus on different model phones.

    Enjoy!

    - Eric
