If so, what software would it use to do this...in the online 8600 manual it stipulates the need to use Windows Media Player 10 to enable this transfer, and WMP 10 is not available for Mac...the Mac platform is not even mentioned, if Verizon supports it.
I apologize for my mistake. Verizon's Music Essentials Kit is not compatible with Mac, only Windows XP at this time. Our Office Kit is compatible with Mac, for tethering your PDA or data enabled handset to a laptop for intenet access. There is no information about enabling music transfer on the Mac anytime soon.

Your best bet for getting music from your Mac to your phone will be with a memory card and card reader. Just make sure you put the music in the correct folder (there are 4 folders on the card once your phone formats it). The music files need to go into the my_music folder.

And as far as trimming the songs and making them into ringtones, this forum has mentioned a proram called bitpim...does bitpim work on Macs, or is there a Mac alternative for this action?
Check out the download link available here: Welcome to BitPim.

Also, I'm told the 8600 has no stereo headphone jack...how do you play your mp3s out thru any other system than the tiny phone speaker...is there an apdapter available?
This is only partly true. There is no 2.5mm jack like on many other phones. The 18pin charging port is actually the audio output port on the 8600. There is an adaptor in your box that converts this 18pin port to 2.5mm. From there you just need a 2.5mm-3.5mm converter. Or, you can buy a pair of headphones with the 18pin connection built right in for a direct connection (Verizon sells them for $29.99 and up).

The problem is, you need to have just Mp3 files.. make sure they aren't iTunes DRMed files.. Also.. if it doesn't connect, use a different memory connect device.

Mac is fully supported by Verizon's software. It always has been. The 8600 can utilize a storage card up to 2GB. The phone itself has less than 20MB built in storage.

I'm buying an 8600 Monday, and want to how to do a few music-related things:
    - Is there any way I can transfer mp3s to my phone's music storage from my Mac. I'm always amazed, what with iPod and iTunes as the gold standard for portable music, how these cell phone makers are happy to embrace the inferior Windows Media platform, but leave out Mac capability. Macs can, of course, carry Windows Media Player thru version 9. Anybody know of a way to make this work?

    - As above, any Mac-based program for turning your mp3s into your ringtones

Also curious how large is the 8600's music storage capacity. Thanks
