so i'm probably bumping an old thread, but i'm having issues and i'm like, dying.

I have the Samsung SCHA930 and i use this amazing ringtone site called phonezoo.com it's all free ringtones and you can make them yourself or get someone elses. the only charge is the pix message fee. anyway... so i get them, and the file is an .mid and i don't know what that means but i know that it's supposed to be an mp3. how do i fix it or whatever? it doesn't play and it won't let me save it or anything so something is wrong. please help.

Alright. For my Example I'll using a file apropriately named alecbaldwinrant.mp3

1)Open Sound Editor (i.e. Fleximusic Wave Editor or whatever you like to use preferably freeware or shareware, right???)

2)edit the mp3 to a good part whatever your preference. In my example, I edited the mp3 to say the following: 'I want you to know something, ok? I, I'm tired of playing this game with you. I'm leaving this message with you to tell you... you have insulted me for the LAST time. You have insulted me. You don't the BRAINS or the decency as a human being!' It's about 17 seconds long and I set it as my boss' ringtone. Hardy har har.

    3) I made sure that the frequency was higher than 22,000Hz and that it was in stereo and 16 bit. This stuff is extracurricular. Mostly just to make my sound better on the final product, i.e. not needed. I make sure to save this clip as an mp3 and name it alec1.mid. The full filename in windows is still alec1.mid.mp3 but I always set my filenames as hiding the extension (just my preference).

    4) I open Winamp and play the selected clip. (so I can hear the final product). Then I open the playlist editor and click (in the file field) file info. There are two fields for ID3v1 and ID3v2. I click on ID3v1 and fill out comments and type of music. You can fill out whatever. I'm not exactly sure you have to fill in anything at all really. But, you must also click on the ID3v2 tag to enable it. I just proceed to click the option on the bottom where it says copy info from ID3v1 so that I don't have to retype. Now click Save Changes and you can exit this program.

    5) Now open whatever email you use. I use yahoo so I email 310*******@vzwpix.com with my attached mp3 clip alec1.mid and presto in about 2 or 3 minutes (depending on traffic I suppose) I get notice of an incoming message.

    Peace

Can I ask you for a huge favor, 'bro? Can you walk me thru that process and
tell me exactly where and what steps I have to do the tag things in now?

    I owe you man...

    Dude222,

I was the same way. In the beginning months, I used Winamp all the time to do the IDtags but for whatever reason, they were not needed since February up until a month ago. So I got lazy about doing this extra step. However, you now have to edit both V1 and V2 tags and make sure you save the changes in order for the email process to work. BTW, I use Fleximusic Wave Editor to edit my wavs and mp3s to the proper 18 sec or less length. Eat that, VERIZON!

Hell yeah... I got Alec Baldwin's stupid rant and rave as my ringtone. Hah hah.

So are you saying you can still customize your own tones? Do I need to use something I don't already have? I'm still trying to make them the way that we spoke about before. I was using winamp at the beginning to make sure the file was configured a certain way, but I stopped using it when I realized I could still make my own tones, and doing the WinAmp thing was just an additional step I could save a little time by bypassing it.

Someone else I know that has the A930 just texted me yesterday and asked me if I was also having problems doing the ringtone thing. It's confusing as to why it would only happen with certain phones, instead of all of them across the board. I wonder if it has anything to do with phones that have been out for awhile.

    Dude222,

check out the sticky threads. And go get Winamp ASAP. Best of luck. I made my best friend's ringtone the end of the manah manah song cuz it irritates him to no end! Hooray Ringtone!

BTW, the end of manah manah has the following:

"It was wonderful! Bravo! I loved that! Oh, it was great! Well, it was pretty good! Well, it wasn't bad. There were parts of it that weren't very good though. It could've been a lot better. I didn't really like it. It was pretty terrible. It was bad. It was awful. Oh, it's terrible. Get 'em away! HEY! BOO!"

It's Verizon for sure. Samsung could care less what you download on your phone, they made their money when they sold the phone initially. Cell phone companies make cell phones to the specifications of the carriers; the only reason our phones won't 'cooperate' any more, or in the first place, all models are different; is because Verizon 'told' them to disable certain features.

In the case of this customized ringtone problem, they probably further disabled this particular function. My guess would be that if it doesn't originate from Get It Now, it ain't goin' on your phone.

It's Verizon all the way, trust me. $83,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.00 (That's a Gajillion dollars by the way) still isn't enough for them. Even with us paying .25 each time we receive a tone we send from our email.

It's not enough to make me get a new phone yet, but it may be enough for me NOT to sign another contract with them...

    Misscuetee,

Are you saying that your son has a newer model of Samsung phone? Perhaps Verizon has figured out that too many SCHa930s are getting ringtones for free and are conspiring to shut us down. Bummer. I still say there has got to be a way to use the microSD and make the phone recognize sound files that are placed on it via computer. Hopefully, someone out here who is way smarter than me can figure the go-around on this latest snafu.

    Peace

Several guys at another well-known forum confirmed my suspicions. They've been having problems since mid May. I've tried several solutions with using the microSD card and my computer but the phone simply won't read the data files when I return the microSD back into the phone. AND Samsung made sure that bluetooth file transfers will not work at all from the outset of the phone's manufacture. Oh well. Hopefully, we're all wrong about Verizon catching on.... and it's some glitch in the system.

    Peace

Interesting, it probably is Verizon then. I wouldn't be surprised if they had 'someone' reading these forums...pretty pathetic. Well, at least I got some cool tones outta the deal. Guess it's time to figure out how to get around this little bump in the road. DID YOU HEAR THAT VERIZON?? LOL...Thanks man, keep in touch if you figure anything out and I will do the same.

    Dude222,

You helped me out in November when I decided to get this a930 Samsung. I've been doing well with over a hundred customized ringtones... until last week. Everything I've been sending to myself has now become those pesky qcp files instead of the normal mp3 files. Looks like Verizon has wisened up. If they are the cause of this... it's a shame. I've so many good ringtones to make. And I ain't gonna pay $1.50 per ringtone on some stupid paysite or even worse... pay $1.50 to Verizon for that stupid Get It Online feature ringtone thing they advertise. Maybe it's time for some crafty person to find a new way to circumvent those money grubbers at Verizon.

AND btw, those sites that ask for your phone number and name so they can send you a ringtone for free. Forget about it. Do you really want your name and number floating around for some ad agency or marketer to find?

    Peace
