Edit the sound file to make it shorter.
That's one of the fun things with Windows Mobile 6 and 6.1
For some reason Microsoft made it finish the Text Message Indicator sound, no matter if you read it, are reading it, or click on Read Later. It will play the sound file from start to finish.

I'm having a problem with the length of my text tones. I figured out how to set the tone for my texts, but sometimes it is way too long. On my old phone, when I went to the text, the tone would stop, but for some reason with this phone I can't figure out how to make it stop.

    Any suggestions?

You can use mp3's as ringtones only if they are 300kb or less. I had this problem with mine. Just get a wav editor program and shorten the part of the song you want.

The only thing that's strange is you can't set a ringtone for a text message allert unless it's in your docs folder, not in a subfolder.
