Take it in to a Sprint store, ask for the firmware upgrade. (free)
Push comes to shove, you'll pay $55 if it needs repaired.

When I try do download applications, ringtones, pictures, etc. My phone turns off before the download screen comes on. I can't even get support from Sprint and I don't have money for a new one. I've had my phone for 1 year and 7 months. I already tried looking for firmware hoping that was the issue but it stays on the screen saying "Checking for updates..." and the up/download arrows go gray after a minute.

Any information is useful and I'm assuming that I need a new phone.
