I want to choose software to doing animation. This is for an entry-level person who has about $1000 to spend. I am looking for the best combination of 'ease of use' and sophistication as ability increases. There is more than sufficient hardware resources to run just about anything. Availability of templates and libraries would be of special interest as well, and could be viewed as separate additional purchases.

    Thanks!

Vue 6 is supposed to be really good, you can see videos done using it on youtube.

don't use maya or softimage if you want to create gamecontent!

    uhhh....

well if poser is the only 3d experience you have. and you arent ready to dive head 1st into hardcore studying and dedication to become a decent 3d modeler. if all you are trying to due is simple animations...

look into carrara 3d studio. it is very cheap, super simple and has enough tools to get you to a good start. i use 3dsmax, and maya, i am told to split my time between the 2 of them, so i dont forget how to use either, because they are sooo freakin opposite. but speaking from experience, you are not going to crack open either of the 2 programs, and create anything even remotely decent, within a month. some people try for a year before pulling off something worthy of showing people.

3d modeling and animation honestly look a LOT easier than it is. the reason for this is because we all have grinded our brain in it for 30+ hours a week for the past few / several years. no joke.

but i started with ray dreams (sold to cararra), then moved to carrara, then split my time with carrara and bryce, and also poser. stopped using poser because i decided i wanted to make my OWN models. moved on to lightwave, and after a long time of being intimidated by it, i seriously dove into 3dsmax. bought a lot of books, and read a lot of tutorials. got pretty god at it, and decided im as good as i can get, on my own. now i go to the academy of arts univ. as a 3d animator, i am forced to use maya...

my advice, use bryce / carrara / any of the low level 3d progs, just to get a solid foundation of how to work in the 3d world before wasting your time with 3dsmax or maya.. it will save you much time.

Try Maya, I find it very easy to use and a robust piece of software. There is even a Personal Learning Edition available to download from thier site aliaswavefront.com . Its practically the full version of the program, with a few minor limitations, and a very bothersom watermark...
But if you look in the right places...

It really depends on what type of modelling you want to do, for games Blender and Milkshape, but for more detailed works you can't go past 3D Studio Max.
