The reason I want prepaid for my daughter is because she has just gotten her first job, and although I am buying her the phone, she will be responsible for buying airtime and add-ons. If she has a contract and goes overtime, then I will be the one who pays for it. By having her on prepaid she will only be able to use the time she has, and if she runs out out of airtime it will be up to her to pay for more time, and if she has no money, then she will have to either wait until she gets paid or find another way (such as household chores) to earn money for airtime. She doesn't have a credit card or checkbook, so if she had a contract then she would have to pay through me, and all this goes against what I am trying to teach her about being responsible for her own bill. If in two years she decides to go to college and has a credit card etc then she can go on a contract if she wishes. Right now though, she is fine with being on prepaid and paying for her own airtime.

Right now I am looking at Rogers Prepaid, and the Motorola V3 RAZR Black phone. My daughter could then buy the Anytime Plan, or the 1¢ Evenings & Weekends Plan and add on a text plan or whatever else she wants.

I have one other (possibly stupid) newbie question. What is "CDMA" and "GSM" and what are the differences between them?
basically GSM = Rogers/Fido and has a SIM card
CDMA = all other providers, and there is no SIM card.. your plan is linked to your IMEI.. or your phone

Being 20.. and have gone through all that I think your daughter will get sick of pre-paid soon.

Pre-paid is meant for people who dont use their phone much.. emergency usually or people who are doing illegal stuff.. such as drug dealers

What I did for my little brother (hes 16.. gr11) was: Work your first 2 weeks.. give me your first paycheck, and Ill put it on the account right now.. such as he has paid in advance. He then gets the bills and can see the amt he has go down every month based on his usage

Btw, I've sold plenty of CDMA phones on eBay before, and they have received just as much money back as the GSM phones that I have sold.
Ive had extreme difficulty selling CDMA phones. Im in toronto myself and after having difficulty getting rid of a decent-good bell contract I decided that CDMA isnt the way to go... UNLESS
u are getting a Samsung Instinct/HTC touch w/ unlim internet on bell
have the 15$ unlim internet on telus
Using virgin as a 2nd line

W/ a contract.. you can get rid of GSM within 24hours.. bell took me 2months lol

and in canada.. or @ least toronto there isnt that much choice for CDMA phones... especially if OP is looking to get a decent phone for cheap.. theres tons on craigs.

Looks like K790a would be best for ops daughter

stick w/ GSM whatever you do. Most companies have the same thing.. but honestly signing a contract is much better.

your daughter is 16..going to uni in 2yrs.

Im not sure why people always scream about contracts.. your locked in w/ the company not the plan AND you get a phone @ a really cheap price.. not only that but if you ever want to get out of your contract just post it up on cellplandepot.ca or cellclients.ca (i hate the owner of this site though) and say w/ a 100$ cash incentive.

the major plus about prepaid is that there are no SAF fees, and CID +VM are free.

basically your looking @ a 10$ min top-up monthly.. for something like 30cents/min.

If you get something decent like 1$ a day for unlim incoming then its a min 20$ top-up monthly

you can also go on a monthly contract if you like.

Stick w/ GSM so you can get some of your money back if you decide to sell the phone.. plus your daughter will have much more choice

My daughter is turning 16 in a few weeks, and wants a cell phone for her birthday. The company I work for provides me with a phone and a plan, however only employees and not family members are eligible for this deal. Because my work has always provided me with a phone and plan, and have taken care of all the warranty issues and such, I know nothing about cell manufacturers or providers. The only thing I do know is that I want her to have prepaid and not be locked into a contract. She has recently gotten her first job, and so we made a deal that I would buy her the phone, and then she would be responsible for buying airtime/add-ons etc. She has told me that she doesn't care which provider I go with, and that as long as the phone has a camera/video recorder and isn't too big/bulky she will be happy with it. She doesn't really know what phone she wants and also wants her birthday gift to be a surprise.

So my question is which (Canadian) provider is best for prepaid? My daughter is not really big on talking on the phone (so a basic rate will do) however I know she will most likely be texting a lot. Around here we have Bell, Bell Solo, Fido, Rogers and Telus. Does anyone have any advice as to which of these providers and their phones will be best, in terms of things like price, customer service and dealing with warranty issues etc?
