AT&T does provide unlock codes to their customers in good standing for 90 days. So does T-Mobile. Whether CDMA is better or GSM is better is a matter of perspective and your requirements. For me personally, GSM is a must mostly because I travel overseas and also because AT&T provides excellent coverage in my area and both Verizon and Sprint are terrible.

Then ofcourse there is the added advantage of being able to buy any unlocked GSM phone that has the US frequencies and dropping my SIM card in it and I am good to go.

Yea I called AT&T and they provided the info to get my ericsson unlocked. I don't know whether they thought that piece of crap ericsson wouldn't do much to be unlocked anyways since it'd probably get a resale value of 10$ (LOL), or they just provide the unlocking codes for all their customers no matter what. Although that really isn't going to do me much good since I'm already getting another phone. I just read a brief review on GSM vs. CDMA and it looks like CDMA is so much better in the US than GSM. But I think AT&T is defintely way better than the other carriers in terms of connection. I guess it just sometimes comes down to the carrier instead of the version (GSM, CDMA).

AT&T and T-Mobile are the biggest GSM players. There are many other regional GSM providers like iWireless, Einstein PCS etc.

All GSM provider's use SIM cards & the SIM cards are the same size but that does not mean that the phone will work with another GSM provider's SIM card. Typically all the AT&T phones purchased after Nov 04 are coming in locked, so these would not be able to use another provider's SIM card w/o first getting it unlocked.

I saw on a website that the m in the v9m stands for a phone that is used in states (USA). But I'm getting a v9 and I live in the states so i guess that statement isn't 100% correct. I've also noticed that most of the time the m version is worse than the non m version. Maybe a smaller resolution camera or something else degraded from the non m version of the phone. In addition, I keep seeing the m versions on carriers like verizon or something whereas I only see non m versions on carriers like AT&T (what i use). is that true?
Typically a letter designation signifies different version of the same phone. It does not make one version lesser than the other. In the case of the RAZR 2, the V9 is the GSM version carried by AT&T and the V9m is the CDMA version carreied by US Cellular, Verizon, Sprint etc. The versions are not interchangeable.

    Hope this helps.
