Depends on the time of day and weather.

Its nice to just cruise when its nice and warm, with the windows down etc.

No matter how far you drive
when you start your car (when the engine and everything is cold) it takes 6 miles for the Catalytic Converter to heatup, so there is 6 miles were you let out harmful gases.
Heat has to be present for the chemical reaction to happen.
So if you do stops less than 6 miles and then let engine cool, you are constantly letting pollution to....pollute. because the converter isnt hot enough to begin the reactions
and what comes out when the chemical reactions happen is
    CO2, N2, and H2O
    Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen Gas, Water.

i used to drive around 80+mph but have since slowed down, especially in my 2008 corolla 5 speed, normally go the speed limit on the highway and enjoy my 40MPG average (on the highway) in town under 30 mpg since i am 1.5 miles from work
