Thanks for the tip. Next time my wife wants to download an 11MB app, I'll
tell her to flag down a passing cruise ship! ;-)

Apple is the actual gatekeeper here. The 10MB limit might be a
capitulation to AT&T (and other "partner" carriers,) but the limitation is
Apple's, not AT&T's. My wife has an unlocked iPhone on T-Mobile USA, and
the PHONE refuses to download files larger than 10 MB- despite T-Mo's
network having no such limitation (other than the user might grow old and
die first waiting for more than 10MB to download at 2G!) ;-)

How does she do that with the app store, Vic?

Again, the limitation seems to be hard-coded INTO THE PHONE by Apple, not a
network message generated by AT&T, else non-AT&T users like my wife
wouldn't see it, and other AT&T phone users would also be hampered by the
    limit, but apparently aren't.

That's quite possible, yes. There are definitely cultural differences
in these things - for example, the Japanese use the "emoji" emoticons
that were added in 2.2, but as I understand it, nobody else does.
Americans use SMS messages much more rarely than Europeans, I am told.

Sling player is rumored to be coming. Wireless modem ability is also
rumored to be coming. MMS is rumored to be coming if you live in
Sweden. I don't need any of those but I would like text selection and
to be able to delete the selected text.

I would like to have MMS. I would also like to have a Sling player for the
iPhone and the ability to use the iPhone as a wireless modem.

I see you are in the UK. Maybe it is a US thing? A couple of them I
know who used it have gotten iPhones and commented to me about no MMS.
It is the only feature that anyone I know with an iPhone has commented
to me about. None has mentioned copy and paste.

    Joost worked for me.
    AmI lucky or what?

Maybe I know how to install flaky apps?

One great iPhone game is FieldRunners ($5). That would be neat on a
large screen PC too. It is well designed to take advantage of the
unique features of the iPhone multi touch screen.

or it's not high on the list. there are far more important things to
add, such as the notification framework that was promised for last
    september.

or maybe the reason is that not too many people care. in any event,
there's swirly mms via jailbreak and it looks like there is an app on
the apps store but it's not available in the usa so i can't tell what
    it actually does.

    > Even some of the most basic free phones offered have MMS.

so? it offers email which is far more capable than mms. also, the
iphone does not have to match feature for feature for every phone. it
does some things other phones don't and it doesn't do some things other
phones do. pick whatever device offers the features you want.

If your going to quote, then do it in the correct way. The above next to my
email is not a quote from me. The one below is. It's hard to tell from this
    end who your quoting.

A major amount of iPhone users have asked the question why is it missing.
They also asked when it will be added. Being it's been a year and a half
from when the 1st iPhone was shipped I would say it won't be added. There is
no money in it for apple. I find it strange that someone has not tried to
sell one on the app store. I've been told that apple has said no. (AT&T
store mgr) But who knows. There is a reason it's not offered.

Even some of the most basic free phones offered have MMS.

Please do explain how on earth you could possibly reach that
conclusion from a Google search. If you know of some actual
    research, please post the URL.

How could it possibly be AT&T? Most of the iPhone-using world does not
use AT&T. I suppose that if, for some bizarre reason, AT&T decided
they didn't want to make money from MMS then Apple could have disabled
it just for the USA, but that's not the case.

I don't know anyone who uses it. That doesn't prove that nobody does,
any more than your anecdote shows that lots of people do.

Very popular sites, like YouTube, must be allowed with special software to
differentiate it. The bean counters have determined WAY too many paying
customers would tell carriers to shove it up their asses if they prevented
YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, etc., from working. So, carriers identify the
calls to these sites and shut down the hobbling to them. MSNBC clips
    play...your local TV streamer doesn't.

So, we make this work ad an ad campaign to make us look great. We create
special "software" to make the experience so wonderful...making us heros,
    not the goats we are....

Yeah, on a computer yes. I'm not talking about a computer or wi-fi. Get it
off your iPhone using your Unlimited data plan. Not going to happen if there
over the limit that AT&T has Imposed. That plan that is unlimited sure has
    limits.
