Hello,
I am an IT professional and am looking for a phone with any carrier that can do the following
- Has a decently fast, accurate browser
- Can run a free VNC client
- Has a free SSH client capable of tunneling to secure those VNC (and other) connections and stay connected for other apps (multi task-capable)
- Can receive alerts/email
- Has a large touch-screen for easy panning/clicking/zooming on VNC.
- Is stable enough to do all of the above
The G1 is the only phone that I have found that seems to be up to the task. I don't care for windows mobile(though I am open to reason), and the only blackberry apps that can do secure remote access cost major $$$.
Here are some the 3rd-party apps I found. I tried them in the android emulator:
connectbot - Google Code
android-vnc-viewer - Google Code
Unfortunately, I live in an area that does not have 3G coverage by T-Mobile (Ohio). But iI do have strong EDGE coverage, does anyone think that I would be able to perform VNC operations if I use low bandwidth settings? (Yes, I know it has Wi-Fi/802.11)
If not, can someone recommend a phone based on my needs? I am currently with Verizon. Most of my friends and family use them as well, so I am simi-reluctant to switch. However, most, if not all of Verizon's phones are crap, and their data plans are very expensive. So I am looking for a phone and carrier that fits my profession and can provide cheap bandwidth.
I would like to be as cost-effective as possible
Thanks.
