They also plugged it in to charge, but it never charged up and we guessed maybe the battery was just really old or bad. They also didn't have any batteries for me to try in the Blackberry.

Came home and was able to borrow a friend's battery temporarily and successfully powered it on. The "my number" display listed a number, but after calling it, determined it was not a number in operation and so I'd like to keep it to use as my own.

After performing a "Wipe Handheld" function (which doesn't wipe out the number), is there a way to also delete the phone number in there so that I can eventually take it in to use as my cell phone?

    Thanks!

Verizon didn't have a battery to check the phone? very odd.

As John said, you can call the esn in and check to verify that the phone is indeed not stolen or reported lost, Verizon should be able to activate it for you.

Just remember, you will have to switch over to a blackberry plan, which is $30 a month, plus whatever other function you'd like...for example Navigator, Visual Voice Mail, etc.

Verizon should just be able to program in the ESN to your account (you can do this over the air now) assuming it's not lost or stolen.
