Verizon didn't have a battery to check the phone? very odd.

As John said, you can call the esn in and check to verify that the phone is indeed not stolen or reported lost, Verizon should be able to activate it for you.

Just remember, you will have to switch over to a blackberry plan, which is $30 a month, plus whatever other function you'd like...for example Navigator, Visual Voice Mail, etc.

Verizon should just be able to program in the ESN to your account (you can do this over the air now) assuming it's not lost or stolen.
