haha. to get locked ones, it's either you buy a used one or a refurb from at&t or verizon...
i think it would be nearly impossible to get a new one that is locked.

That's how supply and demand works in a capitalist system. Demand is very high, so the price is going to be high. And yes, Apple gets to benefit from the high demand. It is their reward for making a device that is in such high demand. Over time though, as newer more powerful devices come into the market and raise the bar, the price of the iPhone will drop. Right now, other manufacturers are working with designers and service carriers to develop competing devices, such as Palm's new "Pre". Once the new devices hit the market, that will take away some of Apple's iPhone business, and push down the price of the iPhone as well. For now though, it's Apple's game.

It's amazing how much iPhones cost outright without signing an agreement (typical in the US to get a discount on the phone when signing an agreement with the carrier). With the 2 year agreement, I paid $199, but outright buying the phone would run about $700. I just recently read an article on the web posted by a company that researches product costs for the manufacturers. According to them, Apple's cost for an 8 gig iPhone is about $175.

i posted a link in the sciphone thread. it's where im planning to get a phone from. its called Twift.com

called them up and i inquired about n95 8gb, 5800, and the iphone. though i find their iphone 3G 16gb relatively cheap, it's still a whopping 700$ so i'm think if i'll go with it or settle for an 8Gb. but those three are the ones are really interested in.

great plan you have there. i mean 7.5 hours of free talk time. not bad. as long as AT&t's service is good.

but if you're not in post paid, you think you would still spend 85$ every month?

120? wow, that should really be fake. though a lot of us retailers get their iphones ordered and made from china.due to cheap cost of labor thus cutting down the prices..

Yes, I pay $69.95 (usd) a month for 450 minutes, nights and weekends are 'free' and don't count against my 450 minutes. I also pay $5 a month for 200 sms text messages, and all US cell phones come with about $10 in taxes, so overall, I pay $85 a month. That plan also includes the unlimited data plan as well. It's a bit pricey as far as plans go, but that's because most other phones do not have high speed data plans attached to them as well. As far as text messaging goes, I don't message much, so I bought the lowest # of messages I could because I do at times receive messages. Also, there are apps that let you send text messages for free, and even apps that let you make VoIP calls as well, so if push comes to shove, I could use those to extend the minutes and messages that I pay for with the plan. Also, I typically use less than 450 minutes anyways, so I'm in pretty good shape with the plan I have.
