Oh and you are mistaken it is NOT illegal under FCC rules and regulations. Your information is incorrect.
I have this service as well through a company called ProxyComm. It is basically a virtual number that rings through a web portal. I have two numbers with different area codes, on one cellphone handset. The service is great! Let me know if you would like some more info.

It's like "you can't hit your brother, but If I happened to turn my back and don't notice, it's OK".

What they are doing is releasing phones with the capability of hold multiple numbers on one sim or a phone that can hold multiple phones. If it is a dual SIM phone, you activate the SIM...not the phone. Therefore, the carrier would never know. When you activate two numbers on one iDEN SIM, the network doesn't pull up any previous information...so they also don't know you're using multiple numbers...also, the numbers aren't "linked" in any way.

Carriers are no longer "allowed" to know or knowingly activate more than one line on one cell phone.

I believe this law (protocol) went into effect January of 2008.

I just realized that what he used was an indirect third party company doing it. I'm not sure if or how the law regulates them.

What is illegal, having two numbers or two numbers on one phone? If it's the latter, Nextel does this, and if I remember correctly, years ago, VZW did it too. You needed an upper level tech to do it (and that's the reason for the NAM 1 and NAM 2 in VZW phones or so I was told), but you were allowed two numbers on one phone, they just didn't work simultaneously. As to Nextel, here's the proof: CNET link.

That is prohibited by the FCC...

But, how did you do it?
