Apple nor AT&T will sell it without a data; they also won't sell it without a 2-year contract. You therefore would have to purchase it from eBay, a friend, or unlocked (online retailer or offline store/person), either of which will likely cost more expensive than Apple/AT&T. As to your original question, yes you can swap between the iPhone and a "regular" phone. However, the catch is that even if it's unlocked AT&T can detect the phone your using and force the data plan on you. AT&T occasionally sweeps or audits accounts and if they find out that you have an iPhone with no data plan they will add it. You might be lucky and they never sweep/audit your account and therefore you can get away with it, but that's taking a chance.

I won't be doing either of those. You can't get an iPhone without the data plan officially. (I'm trying to do it by getting around the AT&T/Apple screw the customer policy.) I would buy an iPhone without any plan. Then buy a cell phone with an AT&T voice plan. Then swap the SIM card from the cell to the iPhone and hopefully enjoy the voice service. The SIM is going from a cell to a data device though.

Are you thinking of constantly switching SIMs, or just updating your contacts from your old phone, to your iPhone? I think that would get very old, very fast. I didn't even know you could get an iPhone without the data plan....

I want to use an iPhone to sync my contacts and calendar with my mac but don't want the data service plan AT&T requires. (Rather than spend another $30 for the data I can wait 'til I get home to check my email.) Would it be possible to get AT&T voice service on a standard cell phone then switch the sim card into an iPhone for voice usage? I've heard of it being done between cell phones but didn't know if it could be done between a cell phone and a data device. Thanks.
