I am from Western Canada, so it limits my choices a little bit.

As a 1st Gen iPhone owner, I can tell you right now that these devices are absolutely tough as rocks when it comes to reliability. Of course, reasonable conditions permitting, you can feasibly maintain an iPhone for a very long time even after dropping it on solid concrete several times - I speak from sheer experience.

iPhones, as much as people may call them overrated, are in fact highly useful devices that are easy to use and a fun accessory to have around. You'll pay a premium for its services, but it depends on how much you're willing to spend and how much you think you'll gain from the purchase.

    Good luck with your decision.

By the way, I'm not sure what country/region you're hailing from, but I'd recommend looking into Motorola's devices as they are likewise very comfortable to use and high in the utilization measure. It depends on how you think either phone aesthetically looks to you.
