I use for facebook twitter chat email maps with wi-fi with free apps, not all apps are able to run over wifi, most will try to use the data plan.
The ones I use do use wi-fi if you tell them to.
Check my blog Juan Carlos Riano to get the list of free apps I use.

This does not work with BlackBerry 8530

HTC phones are good wifi phones. Been to a couple of good phones, Touch and HD and both have good wifi connection. I can even use my VoIP service with Onesuite and make calls through the internet via free wifi.

my contract is about to expire and i can finally dump the p.o.s phone i have now.

i want to get a smartphone with wifi capabilities and have it connected to my own wireless because i live at a university and there is wireless internet virtually everywhere. im NOT going to use the data options the service provider has.
I didn't get if you are in the usa or not...but you can get a SIM card for unlocked smartphone. WOW Mobile has 3 plans unlimited, no caps... T-Mobile is the tier-1.
Just get a wholesale knock off phone or a gsm unlocked phone off of ebay.
Install the WOW Mobile SIM card and connect to wifi. WIMAX is available in a few areas and more coming this year.

i keep seeing "u need a data plan to use this smartphone" but im not going to be "USEING" it in that way but at the same time they tell me it is mandatory, which is bull****.

it is like saying "you need to buy an internet package with your laptop" when there are many things you can do without internet and at the same time can steal ur neighbors wireless type thing

is there a way to do this? (this will be on a family plan if that matters)
I also have no use for a data plan and use a smartphone (HTC kaiser, GSM) You didn't mention if you want to sign a contract or not, or what provider you use and if you want to change providers or not. Anyway, I use T-Mobile because they are the only ones that let you just buy Cell Service and use your own phone. This is the way it should be, but that's another story. Their no contract plans let you choose about 750 min. plans up to unlimited min. family plans. I personally stay away from contracts and buy my own phones on E-bay. I may not have the newest phone, but it has everything (GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3M camera etc.) and was around $100. If you have to have the latest greatest phone and don't want to spend $500 then a contract may be for you, but I will never have a contract again or pay $30/mo for a data plan just because I use a smartphone. I use my GPS which gives me locations to the closest restaurants, gas, etc and WiFi is all over where I work and at my home, so I have no need for data. I don't use a lot of minutes, which gives me the choice to use prepaid services if I wanted too (with no data) and I have done this. The 2 major carriers need to change their business model before I will ever go with them again. You have many more possibilities if you do not buy a subsidized phone, it may cost you more upfront, but it's worth it, and there's nothing wrong with used phones or even just buying a new one on E-bay, they have every model even the latest greatest. I definitely agree with you that having to purchase a data plan is complete Bull****. I want Cell service from my provider, I want to use whatever phone I choose.

We all know that these days there is a lot of craze about mobile phones among the people of UK. The handsets not only have become the multi-purpose device, but users also get a lot of offers with them. Today we see a number of mobile phone deals in the market under which users get the network services as well as a plenty of offers.

Contract deals are most popular ones among mobile phone deals in the present scenario. For availing these deals, you have to sign an agreement of 12-18 months, in lieu of which you get the network services, a handset and several offers. These deals are often taken by those who do not want to change their network services frequently. On taking these deals, you receive a bill as per your usage at the end of each month. Yeah on a lot of Nokia phones, such as the E63-2, a message will pop up asking you which type of connection you want to use. There's a way to even set it to default on wi-fi, but I can't say the specifics off the op of my head. Also, on a lot of other smartphones, such as the Blackberry or Blackjack, you can configure the settings that would be set to a data plan to just a bunch of gibberish (i.e. set the wap and medianet settings to a bunch of zeros).
