Additional live wallpapers are available for free and for pay in Android Market for your amusement.

the weather channel app on market has a little temperature icon on the grey bar across the top... This feature did not work on 2.0.1. Gui seems WAY more responsive. The phones code that manages automatic memory management by closing and opening apps seems to work a little better. My average memory usage has come down by a couple mb's. The response time on the accelerometer seems to be a bit faster now. The pinch and zoom is awesome but has some issues still. They need to make it available no matter what the specific application says.

    NOTE TO YAHOO USERS!!!
    a theory for now.

If you have your Yahoo email setup via the guide then it WILL continue to work and you wont have to redo it.... this only works if you MANUALLY update. I am about 80% sure of this as i have tested my theory on about 12 droids now.

If you waited till after the 2.1 update and then setup your yahoo account.... it wont work. Again this is only a theory for now.

Cool new update feature I noticed.

Check out your picture gallery (menu--->gallery)

It has been redesigned and has almost a Windows Vista style design...pretty cool.

The most notable is the voice to text (there's a microphone icon next to the space bar on the on screen keyboard) and the gallery.

    Thanks!

Mine was successfully done (took me a while to realize vista doesn't require the .zip ending, so I had to retry). Just turned it on.

By the way, don't freak out if you do this and then complete it only to find out your phone takes a while to reboot. Mine stayed on the "DROID Eye" for about 5 minutes before turning on.

It's on now, will report back later.

Oh, I forgot, John...what are these "changes" and new features? Looks exactly the same to me except the pull menu icons are larger.

I'll wait for the test pilots to find how this 2.1 is reacting, i'll wait for the push.

Mobile Crunch put together a quick how-to for updating your Droid to 2.1 manually.

    Here’s how to do it:
    • Download the update package from here. Don’t unzip it! If your browser automatically unzips things (like Safari on Mac, for example), use a different browser. It MUST stay zipped.
    • Rename the file from signed-voles-ESE81-from-ESD56.fa406da6.zip to update.zip. If you’re using an OS that doesn’t show the .zip extension, just rename it “update” — otherwise it’ll be called “update.zip.zip” and won’t work.
    • Take the microSD card from your phone, plug it into a microSD card reader.
    • Drag and drop the “update.zip” file into the main folder (otherwise known as the root folder) of your microSD card. Don’t go looking for a folder called “main” or “root” – we’re referring to the folder on your microSD card that holds all the other folders.
    • Turn your Droid off, and put the microSD card back in.
    • Hold down the letter “X” on the keyboard. While still holding it, turn your Droid back on. You should see an exclamation point icon appear on your screen.
    • Push the volume up button and the camera button at the exact same time. If nothing happens, do it again. When you get to the bootloader screen, you know it worked.
    • Use the d-pad to navigate to the “apply: update.zip” option, and choose the file you just dragged onto your microSD card.
