I wouldn't use any type of powder, never get it out of the cracks of your phone, but plain rice works great as well

Yes that is true. I also heard about a weird thing like using rice powder. Not sure if it really works.

Another trick that I use, that works for me 99% the time: I have a ziploc baggie full of Silica Gel Packets. When a wet phone is brought to me, I put the phone in a baggie with a few packets. after 24 hours, good as new.

Here are some general steps you need to follow if you dropped your cell phone into water by accident.

Get the phone out of water as soon as you can - The cell phone covers are tight but water can go inside in few seconds. So take out your phone from water.

Remove covers - Removing covers will get the water out which somehow entered inside the cover but couldn't enter the internal portion of the phone yet.

Remove Battery - Removing batteries is a must. You will have to do it without giving a second thought. Most phones get damaged from water because electricity and water doesn't go together. Water helps dissipate heat from short circuit and can damage the phone. You phone will survive if you cut the power supply of your phone by removing the battery.

Remove SIM Card - Remove SIM Cards to prevent your data and contacts getting wiped off. Never heat the sim card to dry it. Just rub it on soft dry cloth or towel.

Dry your phone using towel or napkin gently - Shake the phone without dropping it to get the water out. Then use a water or moisture absorbing towel or napkin around the phone gaps, slots and corner. Remember as long as water is there it will be unsafe to use the phone.

Use vacuum cleaner to get the moisture out - Finally if you want , you can use vacuum cleaner to get the last bit of moisture out from the phone. Using little bit of hair dryer from some distance (make sure it doesn't make your phone too hot) can also help drying it up.

Check your phone after 24-48 hours - And finally after waiting for a day or two you can put all the components of your phone back in its place and try switching the phone on. If phone doesn't start up, put phone charger without the battery and check again. If still nothing works then you need to see your phone maker's authorized dealer. They can fix it often. Do not hide the truth that your phone has been wet since they can get prove from the phone internal parts that the phone has been wet.
