There is nothing secreative about my phone or carrier it just doesnt come in to play

I must disagree with your statement....

Its like saying in order to send a text message you have to tell me who the carrier is...or in order to place a phone call you must tell me who makes the phone

Whatever the technical details behind placing phone calls or sending text messges are, the fact remains that I can send a text message or place a phone call to you without knowing who your carrier is or who makes your phone.

I am looking for a service that will let me know (either via text message or by calling me) when I have a new email

So again, I dont see why the service would need to know what type of phone I have or who my carrier is in order to send me a text message or place a phone call to my simple, cheap, non smart phone....cell phone

Such a service could provide a wonderful facility for people who do not have or want to pay the fees (data plan etc) associated with a smart phone.

That is simply what my question is....does anyone know of such a service ?

If you had stated something such as "I have a Motorola RAZR X3 and I have Verizon Wireless Service. Can I receive email with this combination?" someone might have an answer. What is so secretive about your phone and carrier? What you can do is controlled by the phone you have and the services offered by your carrier. You cannot simply pick up a phone at a thrift store and start using it.

So I assume you do not have an answer to the original question, which probably would have been easier for you to state in the beginning

    Thanks for yor time

Im talking about getting email sent to a simple cell phone via one of 2 ways

    1. I would receive email in the form of a text message to my cell phone
    2. I would receive an email read to me by an IVR application that would place a phone call to my cell phone

So who makes the phone, or who the serice provider is does not come in to play

You still did not identify your phone or your carrier. Without that information how can you expect an answer?

OK, well let me try to explain

If I had a Blackberry, I could send/recive/reply to emails that one or more of my email accounts received.

What I am looking for is a service that would allow me to receive and reply to emails that one or more of my email accounts receive, right from my cheap plain old cell phone.

I can envision receiving the emails via text message or by receiving a phone call and having an IVR application read me the message. Then I could reply via text or voice.

Anyone know of such a service ?

A cellular phone has to be part of a cellular carrier's network to perform any external function. Your question does not have enough details to allow someone to give you an answer.
